The entire Mahinda community proudly congratulates our distinguished Old Mahindian, Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, on being awarded Russia’s prestigious Order of Friendship by President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.

A proud milestone for Sri Lanka's international diplomatic presence, Dr. Weerasinghe is the only Asian to receive the award in 2025. This remarkable honour reflects his lifelong dedication to strengthening the friendship between Sri Lanka and Russia, and stands as an inspiration to all Mahindians around the world.

Dr. Weerasinghe, who graduated with honors from the Moscow Medical Academy, was Sri Lanka's ambassador to the Russian Federation from 2015 to 2018. He is currently the chairman of the Russian Geographical Society's Colombo center and the general secretary of the Sri Lanka-Russia Friendship Society.  Under his direction, the two countries' long-lasting goodwill, scientific cooperation, and cultural exchange have all flourished.
